Day 2 9:35 Generational Attitudes to Investing: Preparing for Longevity

An important factor to consider when making long-term investment decisions is the changing attitudes towards investing held by the Millennial generation and Gen Y's potential impact on the finance industry as a whole.

Students around the world are becoming actively involved in the endowment investment process, with some even being allocated endowment funds for the specific purpose of making socially responsible investment or impact investments.

A new wave of employees is preparing to enter the financial industry, with socially-minded investments growing in popularity. And as baby-boomers pass along their inheritance over the coming decades, opportunities for advisors arise as a new generation of investors emerges.

  • How challenging your investment mindset to align with Millennial attitudes makes smart long-term business sense
  • Can asset managers and advisors play a role in developing the next generation of socially-minded investors and investment professionals?
  • Can this shift in mindset towards more socially-conscious investing be dismissed as a youthful fad or craze? Or should the finance industry take the concerns of the next generation of investors more seriously?
  • Can impact investing and socially responsible investing transform post-recession negative public opinion of the financial industry?

  1. GEN Y less willing to sacrifice beliefs. Do not feel they have to. Sustainability expectations. Would love to invest but loaded with debt. Wealth handed over.
  2. A Toronto Life article from 2009 called “How to Get Ahead in a Recession,” Katrina Onstad describes how the job market’s decline hasn’t fazed Millennials, who are too drunk on their “inherent specialness” to grasp that the new economy can’t promise them the nice lifestyle they grew up with. “If [members of Gen Y] have an inflated sense of entitlement, so do we all.
  3. In his 2008 book, The Trophy Kids Grow Up, former Wall Street Journal editor Ron Alsop propagates this myth by seeking to “prepare” companies for dealing with Millennials—or, as he describes them, “the most demanding and most coddled generation in history.”
  4. To believe large sections of the media, today’s twenty-somethings are a generation of rioting smartphone users, indifferent to politics and interested only in Facebook, Xbox and trappings of celebrity fame and fortune.
  5. But having come to maturity in a recession, ‘Generation Y’ is sceptical of politicians who they see as having bankrupted them with tuition fees before they had the chance to grow up and mortgaged the future of the country to bail out bankers.
  6. Those lucky enough to to have a job, still have a lot to learn about managing their finances.
  7. Appealing to Generation Y’s lifestyle-fi rst priorities will help, advises Lennon. “Frame a pension in a way that meets their lifestyle needs. Put some numbers around that as well. Say I’m a 20-year-old and I’m going to retire when I’m 68, if I start my pension now, I’ll get 36% more at 68 than if I wait fi ve years and I’ll get 88% more than if I wait ten years.” Successful marketing of pensions can mean relating the cost of saving for retirement back into real-life terms. Forgoing a coffee or takeaway sandwich a day can easily save £60 a month – or close to the minimum contribution under auto-enrolment for a worker on national average earnings.
